Siesta Shift. Well-being through Spanish design in Tokyo.

The exhibition organised by ICEX merges the tradition of the Siesta with contemporary design.

The Siesta Shift exhibition, organised by ICEX, aimed to promote Spanish design in Tokyo. The Spanish embassy served as the backdrop in which thirteen firms highlighted the importance of Spanish industry for its creativity and quality. The exhibition featured a careful selection of furniture and lighting, including pieces by Sancal.

Despite not being in vogue, the siesta is one of the great pillars of Spanish culture. The curators, Environmental Planning Laboratory (EPL) approached this concept from a perspective that is both optimistic and essential for well-being in general and, specifically, as a method to enhance efficiency in the workplace.

In a world where we are always racing against the clock, it is important to “design time”. The studio defines two areas: one for “Relaxation” and one for “Activation”. Short breaks can significantly boost productivity and creativity during the working day.

This is translated into the creation of hybrid spaces in companies where traditional workstations are complemented by areas specifically created for the relaxation of the team.

Soft seating products such as the Loop sofas and the fun Link upholstered chains are two seating alternatives that invite you to disconnect and rest, the former in a more passive way and the latter in a more playful manner.

Sancal’s selection of upholstered furniture has been completed with iconic pieces such as the new Bold table or Tonella Maxi armchair. For the office and cafeteria areas, the Japanese studio proposes the tables and stool of the sculptural Totem and Pion collections. The playful Faces tables add an anthropocentric counterpoint.

Whether it is the use of unique shapes or special finishes, each piece highlights Sancal’s commitment to innovative designs that create spaces that inspire and delight.
