Wallpaper* magazine recognizes the “Void Matters” set of products as one of the best conceptual designs of 2020
As every beginning of the year, together with a judging professional panel from different fields of design, the prestigious publication issues a verdict on what Wallpaper* considers the most outstanding places, products and people of the last 12 months. According to Sarah Douglas, Editor-in-Chief, these awards are “a testament to design’s ability to respond to evolving needs, lift our spirits, and serve the public good” and celebrate that, despite the challenges of 2020, the design community is as creative as active.
Void Matters, Sancal‘s first purely conceptual collection, has been awarded with the “Best Meditation” Award for the reflection on the concept of a void, posed by the Swedish Studio Note and developed together with Sancal’s technical department.
With this masterful exercise in abstraction, Note Studio Design and Sancal respond to the following question: “What defines an object itself, the matter or the void that surrounds it?“ This is the first time the two of them have worked together on a furniture collection born of a conceptual experiment and technical curiosity.
Entitled “Void Matters”, this set of furniture products reflects how void, or the absence of matter, is a design element that also shapes objects. Core and Remnant soft seating, Vestige tables and Dividuals poufs, all designed by Note, share the same source of inspiration. However, each of these spectacular products features its uniqueness.
Besides these products, Note also created a series of abstract ceramic sculptures to explain the concept of “Void Matters”. These were hand made using clay in a small workshop in Totana, a Spanish town famed for the quality of its pottery.
